AASM-ASEM Conference Newport Beach, California October 2007
  • Among the presenters at the American Association of Sensory Medicine - Academy of Sensory Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AASM-ASEM) 5th Annual Conference in Newport Beach, California (October 26-27, 2007) was Lawrence Empting, MD, previously Director of Johns Hopkins Pain Management. Dr. Empting lectured on RSD and Sympathetically Mediated Pain Syndromes. Dr. Empting has been using the Neural-Scan in his private practice for over three years. Other lecturers included Robert Odell, MD, PhD, a Stanford trained MD, PhD who specializes in regional blocks, and physiatrist Steve Masse, MD, whose clinics have three Neural-Scans.

  • Using the Neural-Scan Irwin Bush, MD and his colleague, J. Badradoja, MD, presented a paper showing a relationship between chronic prostate inflammation and S1 lesions. Also, they report this same relationship may exist with vulvadynia. Previously, this relationship with vulvadynia was reported by Margaret Hollingsworth, MD of the Medical College of Wisconsin.

  • Alex Ambroze, MD, Associate Clinical Professor at John Marshall Medical School presented an abstract at the AAASM Conference demonstrating what appears to be a relationship between the degree of pain and the amplitude of the Neural-Scan potentiometer. Dr. Ambroz suggests that this may allow an objective measure for the intensity of the patient's pain, which would be a big step forward as compared to the VAS.

  • Dr. Randall Cork, MD, PhD has retired from LSU Medical Center and is now working for the VA, where his research with the Neural-Scan will continue. To date Dr. Cork has authored four Neural-Scan studies.

  • There are over 700 Neural-Scan devices in use throughout the United States. It is also in use at the UK's Health & Safety Laboratory, and Canada's Department of Rehabilitation in Quebec, where a second unit was recently purchased. In Asia a large pain management practice purchased two devices for use in Singapore, and we have distributors in all the major European countries.

  • NDA will be participating in exhibits at conference throughout the USA. For information or to have copies of studies faxed to you call NDA Support (800) 766-0884 or send us an email.

This website is not for general public use. It is meant for physician reference only.
Nothing presented is meant to represent or imply use other than the FDA Indication and usage.

FDA Indications and Usage: The Neural-ScanTM NCSs is a diagnostic device that allows the quantitative detection of various sensory neurological impairments caused by various pathological conditions or toxic substance exposures. The subject population for whom this device can be used for diagnostic purposes includes any individual capable of communicating the perception of cutaneous sensation (with the potentiometer, which has a separate FDA clearance, the test is not dependent on the subject reporting perception of the cutaneous sensation, since the action potential of the nerve firing is detectable by the potentiometer). The Neural-ScanTM NCSs diagnostic examination may be conducted as part the neurological examination or for screening to detect peripheral neuropathies.
